The Boccia sessions started this month in Maes Cwstennin
Boccia is a Paralympic sport with no Olympic equivalent. It’s a target ball sport which tests both muscle control and accuracy. From a seated position and therefore ideal for wheelchair users players propel balls to land close to a white marker ball – the jack. If you’re unable to grasp and propel a ball a ramp can be used.
It’s an indoor sport, played on a court roughly the same size as a badminton court. You can compete as an individual, in a pair, or as a team of three.
Boccia is very well attended; sessions are run every other Thursday 11am – 12noon in Maes Cwstennin. We have been talking about taking it throughout our over 55 complexes and starting an intraleague where CH’s from different areas can compete against each other.
The feedback from the last 2 sessions have been fantastic:
“Didn’t really want to go as it is not my thing but glad, I did as I have had such a great time laughing and joking with the other, didn’t realise I was so competitive. I can’t wait for the next one”.
“It’s such a great morning I didn’t think I would be able to participate as my mobility is poor but it was really easy and fun, can’t wait of the next one”
CH’s are also thinking of purchasing their own Boccia kits so that they can play in the community centre during the winter months as mood gets low and they lonely.
