Giving Ysgol Llandrillo-yn-Rhos a Safer and More Welcoming Entrance
Pupils, staff and visitors at Ysgol Llandrillo-yn-Rhos are now benefiting from major improvements to the school’s access route, thanks to a partnership between Cartrefi Conwy and EMW Developments. The project came about after the Headteacher approached Cartrefi Conwy for support. The pathway and boundary area leading into the school had deteriorated over time and was in need of significant attention, but with no funding available to undertake the work, the school was looking for a helping hand.
As part of Cartrefi Conwy’s commitment to delivering social value in the communities we serve, we were pleased to step in and help. With the school surrounded by Cartrefi Conwy homes, and many local families using both the school and our housing services, supporting the project was a natural fit.
Working alongside EMW Developments, a programme of improvements was delivered to transform the entrance area. The works included:
The transformation can be clearly seen in the before and after photographs, with the area now providing a much more attractive and practical gateway into the school. The project was led by Phil Davies on behalf of Cartrefi Conwy and Kelvin Edwards, Operations Director at EMW Developments, who worked closely with the school to ensure the improvements delivered a lasting benefit to pupils and the wider community.

Social value is built into every supplier contract because we want our partnerships to create opportunities and lasting benefits for the people and communities we serve. With the school surrounded by Cartrefi Conwy homes, and many local families connected to both the school and our services, this was a community challenge close to home.

For Cartrefi Conwy, this project is a great example of how partnerships can make a real difference. By bringing together local organisations, contractors and suppliers, it has been possible to deliver improvements that the school may otherwise have struggled to achieve. Most importantly, the work has created a safer, smarter and more welcoming environment for the hundreds of pupils, staff and families who use the school every day. It is a lasting investment in the local community and demonstrates what can be achieved when people come together with a shared goal of making a difference.
