Cwrt Ysgol Maelgwn

Having worked together with Conwy County Borough Council Housing Strategy and Social Services teams, Cartrefi Conwy have provided much needed specialist accommodation and affordable housing for local people, on the old Maelgwn school site in Llandudno Junction.

This £3 million housing scheme helped to keep 70 existing jobs and creating six new ones, whilst breathing new life into the former primary school, Ysgol Maelgwn which closed its doors three years ago when the pupils moved to a new local super school, Ysgol Awel y Mynydd.

The development includes 27 homes in total with 13 specialist units for Conwy County Borough Council, 6 semi-detached homes, 6 apartments and 2 bungalows. It is being part-funded by a Social Housing Grant from the Welsh Government, and forms part of our strategy to create 400 new homes over the next four years.

It is the most complicated project Cartrefi Conwy have worked on to date because the old school which opened in 1907 is architecturally important, and many of the original features have being conserved, such as the main school building and detached classroom’s glazed tiling and vaulted timber ceilings.

There is also a brand new communal wellbeing garden, alongside  the main entrance to the building to help residents with mobility issues. A central tree will provide shade for the seating area, surrounded by a series of raised beds with plant selection including  edible herbs and flowering shrubs.
