Charlie McCoubrey

Born in Northern Ireland, Charlie graduated as a dentist at Liverpool university in 1989 and commenced working as an NHS dentist in Rhyl. He became a full partner in 1994 and worked there until he was forced to retire due to a wrist injury in 2012.

Charlie retrained as a mortgage adviser and opened an estate and letting agency in Abergele in 2013. The lack of appropriate and affordable housing was a key driver for his standing as a county councillor, and he was elected in 2017. He was appointed as cabinet member with portfolio responsibility for Housing, Regulatory services and Revenues and Benefits in 2019.

In 2021, Charlie was elected as leader of Conwy Borough County Council and re-elected again following the local elections in 2022. As part of that role, he was the Welsh Local Government spokesperson for Health and social care, WLGA Deputy presiding officer and Vice Chair of the N Wales Corporate Joint Committee and Ambition N Wales.

Charlie stood down as leader in 2025 and has really enjoyed being able to spend more time working within my ward as a county councillor. He is a governor in two local schools in his hometown of Abergele, a trustee of Abergele community action and Chairman of Clwb Rygbi Abergele.
